I board dogs for a few of my friends. They often arrive with a cooked chicken, Polony, Vieanna Sausages etc stating their dogs will eat nothing else. I am instructed to freeze the food, defrost and feed the fussy eaters. Naturally, by the time they go home, they are eating dog food and owners advised that dog foods prepared by leading manufacturers are carefully formulated to supply all the nutrients required for a dog's good health. I also have phone calls for puppies to replace a pet that has died. On enquiring how old the pet was I find they were between five and eight years old and had eaten poultry, meat or from the table their entire lives. Feeding human food in not conducive to a long life. My Chihuahua's live long lives, from ten to sixteen years, unless something unforeseen happens like the death of a bitch after a caesarean section etc. My Ridgeback lifed to the grand oldage of almost thirteen, before she passed on. DAIRY PRODUCTS have the potential of causing diarrhoea and dietary imbalances, Excess dietary calcium can contribute to the development of skeletal problems in the growing dog, as they do not have the ability to digest milk. Some dogs do not produce sufficient amounts of Lactose to handle the large amounts of Lactose present in milk. Lactose is an enzyme essential for the breakdown of Lactose in the intestinal track. Lactose is a simple sugar. FISH is a good source of protein but like meat and poultry lacks the nutritional value of a well-balanced commercial dog food. Raw fish contains a compound that destroys a vitamin in the B group (Thiamine) and may cause deficiency. |
| MEAT AND POULTRY yes, dogs are carnivores by nature but in the wild they eat the entire prey, the intestinal content, flesh and bones. Thus by consuming the whole carcass they obtain all their nutritional requirements. The muscle tissue of meat and poultry are deficient in calcium, phosphorus, iodine, sodium and many other essential vitamins and minerals to sustain good health in the dog. Feeding only meat and poultry has the potential of causing an imbalance in the pets diet. Liver on the other hand is an excellent source of several of the B vitamins. It contains vitamin D, copper and is also a good source of protein. On the down side, liver is excessively high in vitamin A and severely deficient in calcium. High amounts of vitamin A can cause a vitamin toxicity. Feeding too much liver may also cause diarrhoea. Feeding your dog a good source of a well-balanced dog food is the sensible way to go. Feeding titbits and from the table will only ensure a short life span with associated problems. Manufacturers spend a fortune testing and formulating highly nutritional dog foods for the various ages and also for disorders such as overweight, sensitive stomachs, coat etc. in addition to Puppy, Senior Adult and many more. Show your precious dog how much you love him by feeding him correctly thus ensuring he will spend many happy healthy years with you. No healthy dog will starve to death when there is food around, he WILL eventually eat. |

| INCREASED FERTILITY To increase fertility, the bitch must be in perfect condition. Sub-fertility is often apparent in overweight bitches. To attempt to maximise the number of ova shed, a good idea would be to feed the bitch a highly nutritious diet 3-4 weeks before the expected season (heat). This does not imply feeding quantity but rather an increased quality of food. Very lean bitches may need to gain in body mass prior to anticipated breeding. After the onset of bleeding from the vulva, ovulation will normally occur between day 8 -13 but this may differ with bitches. One should try to minimise the embroyonal loss post-conception by avoiding stress, exercise, travelling and excessive environmental heat. Overfeeding during the three weeks post-breeding stages may lead to embryonal loss. Mating the bitch every second day for as long as she is receptive may increase the litter size. A sub-fertile male with poor sperm count may contribute to abnormally small litters. |

NEONATAL FEEDING MANAGEMENT A lot of planning and care go into successful breeding and with Chihuahua's there could be considerable expense with caesareans sections, We mate the best to the best but ultimately how the actual mixture of genes come together is a matter of chance and luck. We have no control over that. We do the best by choosing healthy, excellent and sound stock to breed with. In this country the gene pool is very limited. Breeding is a stressful time for the bitch and she should be in good physical condition, an overweight bitch should be fed a reducing diet and an underweight bitch should be fed a highly nutritious diet in order to gain body mass prior to breeding. Premium maintenance nutrition is of great importance during pregnancy. Total foetal weigh gain occurs in the third trimester (or last three weeks) It has been recommended to feed a bitch normal rations from mating until five weeks of pregnancy and then increase the amount by half the normal amount. (I feed my bitches the same amount through out as they have a tendency to produce very large puppies, this has reduced the amount of caesarean sections) Healthy puppies begin in a healthy uterus, unless the bitch is fed a good nutritious diet through out her breeding life, how can one expect to raise healthy puppies? Diet plays a significant role in the breeding plan and is even more important during pregnancy and lactation. |
